According to a recent article by Jim Bronskill of The Canadian Press, Criminal pardons would be less expensive, easier to get under Liberal budget plan. The Liberal government aims to put their plans in motion to unshackle Canadians with a criminal record from the chains imposed by the previous Conservative government.
Stephen Harper’s Conservative government imposed lengthier waiting periods for both summary and indictable convictions as well as increased the cost of applying for a Record Suspension (formerly a Pardon) drastically.
Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberal government is aiming to alleviate hurdles and stressors, making it easier for Canadians to obtain their Record Suspensions. According to the budget plan, “A pardon increases access to jobs; education, stable housing, and makes communities safer by helping to end the cycle of crime…However, fees and difficult-to-navigate processes pose unnecessary barriers to pardons, particularly among marginalized groups”.
As it currently stands, the waiting period for a Record Suspension (formerly called a Pardon) is five years for a summary conviction and ten years for an indictable conviction. With the proposed changes, these waiting periods may be shortened by half.
